This book shows the “relics” of the Yuan Ming Yuan with more than eighty stone antiquities collected in this volume as a European première. It contains details of the heads of the twelve animals of the Zodiac, artistic stone artifacts created in China but mingled with European stylistic elements, as well as a comprehensive catalogue of the “Da Shui Fa” garden. Each image reflects the Chinese perspective on the creations of European artistic craftwork or, conversely, the European perspective on decorative elements of Chinese charm. For the Yuan Ming Yuan is characterized to an unusual degree by the combination of Western and Chinese artistic traditions, thus reflecting the fondness of the Chinese Emperors for Western art during this heyday of Chinese artistic and architectural traditions.
