Helen Hunt Jackson was a woman ahead of her time. Born Helen Fiske in 1830 in Massachusetts, Hunt-Jackson was a novelist who questioned the actions of the American government in regards to the Native Americans.
Helen authored two books,"Ramona," (1884), a novel about a white man's mistreatment of the Native Indians,"Century of Dishonor" (1881), a groundbreaking work that documented the government's violations of Indian treaties and its disregard for their human rights.
Helen's publications were among the first documentaries that advocated for indigenous people and criticized "white men" and those involved in corruption at American Indians' expense.
Hunt-Jackson also spent countless hours lecturing about the true history – and current plight – of the Native people. And she petitioned for laws and rights on their behalf.
Although her work caused a national uproar, continued to champion her cause and challenge those who opposed her -- including President Theodore Roosevelt.
Today Helen-Hunt's revolutionary and enlightened work is still reprinted, read and discussed by people across the country.
